KwaZulu-Natal - Didn’t pass? Missed those distinctions you were aiming for? Don’t despair.

According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, 9.5 percent of teenage deaths in South Africa are caused by suicide. One of the triggers could be exam disappointment.

But the group says failure is a normal part of life and it doesn’t have to be the end of the world.

According to psychologist Lee-Ann Hartman, it can be a learning curve.

“Failure is often one of the greatest gifts we can get because we learn so much,” says Hartman. “Exams are important, but no exam is life or death.”

Pupils who may be feeling disappointed with their matric results can speak to a Lifeline counsellor at 0861 322 322, or a teacher or religious leader. – The Mercury
