Durban - People in Durban can hopefully expect to see blue skies on Tuesday as the cold, rainy weather experienced in the province over the weekend loosens its grip.

Julius Mahlangu, of the South African Weather Service, said no rain was predicted for Tuesday across KwaZulu-Natal. He said the weather would start to clear up on Monday.

Mahlangu said Durban had about 34.2mm of rainfall on Saturday and was among the coastal areas which experienced the most rain in KZN this weekend.

The rain came with bitterly low temperatures, with the lowest recorded temperature in the province at 3ºC, recorded at Van Reenen’s Pass.

Monday’s temperature in Durban was still a chilly 19ºC.

As the rains pelted various parts of the province, paramedics were busy attending to accident scenes.

ER24’s spokesman, Werner Vermaak, said paramedics attended several collisions involving more than two vehicles.

One incident was on the M1 Higginson Highway in Chatsworth. Two people sustained serious injuries when three vehicles, including a taxi, were involved in a collision on Saturday morning. It is believed one of the drivers lost control on the wet road.

Five people died in accidents over the weekend.

About 50 people were involved in accidents.

On sunday at about 3pm on the Colenso road from Ladysmith towards the N3 to Durban, two vehicles, a BMW and a Hyundai Elantra, smashed against the guard rails. It was not clear to what extent the accidents affected those involved.

Robert McKenzie, of the KZN Emergency Medical Services, said three people were killed and two injured on the N2 at Wilson’s Cutting near Ezinqoleni on Saturday.

Another person was killed and 17 were injured in an accident involving a taxi near Sydney Road, Durban, on Sunday.

Rescue Care’s, Garrith Jamieson, said: “A taxi and bus collided and one passenger in the taxi died before paramedics could arrive.”

The driver of a vehicle, which went off a bridge into the river in eManzimtoti in torrential rain on Saturday, managed to free himself and reach the riverbank unharmed by the time the Durban National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) team arrived at the scene.

The NSRI had been called out by Durban Fire and Rescue.
