Durban - A 32-year-old man had his arm amputated in a horror industrial accident in Cato Ridge on Tuesday.

It was caught “in a conveyor belt while (he was) working in a factory that is known to produce fertilisers and composts,” said Pieter Rossouw, spokesman for ER24, whose paramedics were called to the scene.

When they got to the Gromor factory they found “the conveyor belt had already amputated his arm”.

The unnamed man also sustained severe tissue damage up to his shoulder, Rossouw said.

Collin Holzhausen, a manager at the company, said they were investigating the matter and could not give further information and declined to name the worker.

He said they had contacted the hospital and were told the worker was recovering.

He said the man’s family had been notified.

The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.
