Durban - A man, who escaped a car crash unharmed, was killed when another vehicle smashed through the accident scene.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, died on Saturday at about 7pm on the M4 north-bound near Quality Street.

Garrith Jamieson, of Rescue Care, said in a statement on Sunday that the man had been a passenger in a car which was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

While speaking to police about what had happened, another vehicle crashed through the scene, striking the victim and cops.

The man, he said, lost his balance and fell over the railing and landed on the road below.

Paramedics rushed to his assistance, but he died shortly thereafter.

The two policemen suffered minor injuries.

The incident has similarities with a fatal crash in Adams Road, eManzimtoti, earlier this month.

On June 7, paramedics found a car crashed against the barrier, and the driver, a woman, lying below a bridge near the railway tracks. Authorities said at the time it appeared that she fell from the bridge to the ground below, after jumping over the barrier to relieve herself.

There were several other crashes across the province this weekend.

On Friday night, said KZN EMS spokesman Robert McKenzie, a man was killed when his vehicle overturned on the N2 north-bound before the Umgeni off-ramp. In a separate crash involving two vehicles, on Problem Mkhize (Cowey) Road, two people were injured.

A pedestrian was severely injured at around midnight on Friday on the N2 near the M25 off-ramp. Also on Friday, on the South Coast, one person was injured in a crash involving four vehicles in Margate.

On the R61, before the Southbroom traffic lights, one person was injured when a vehicle overturned.

Near Blood River, one person died and seven were injured after a vehicle overturned.

In a separate crash in Newcastle CBD, two vehicles collided, resulting in the death of one person and leaving four patients injured.
