Vryheid – Following several court appearances, a KwaZulu-Natal man has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for rape and housebreaking, provincial police said on Thursday.

“Vryheid Regional Court convicted and sentenced 26-year-old Sigcino Ricardo Ntombela to 20 years imprisonment for rape and housebreaking,” said KZN police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.

The sentencing, which happened on Wednesday, related to an attack in January this year.

At midnight on January 14, Ntombela broke into the Bhekuzulu home of the 42-year-old victim.

After breaking in, Ntombela chose to switch on the lights, waking the victim. Ntombela proceeded to draw a knife and covered the victim up with a blanket before raping her.

When the sexual attack was over, Ntombela stabbed the victim in the back before fleeing the scene on foot.

“A case of rape was opened at Vryheid police station and the docket was transferred to Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation,” said Zwane.

The unit conducted their investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused.

“The accused made several court appearances until he was sentenced,” said Zwane.

Ntombela was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
