Johannesburg - An alleged serial rapist appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Friday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the 45-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for rapes that he allegedly committed in Waterloo, Verulam.

“The suspect was arrested whilst he was at his workplace in Pinetown. Police have been investigating the case for years until this arrest was made. The suspect has been positively linked to a total of eleven cases of rape through DNA,” Zwane said.

“The suspect would accost couples and young girls and rape them at gunpoint in Waterloo and its surroundings. Police have been investigating cases with the same modus operandi that were first reported from September 2008 to July 2016.”

Zwane said the case was postponed to September 16, for formal bail application.

“We appeal to other people who had been victims of the same incidents and who have not reported to the police, to come forward. The investigating officers can be contacted so that the suspect can be taken for prosecution to face the consequences for his actions.”
