Durban - Three suspects, aged between 24 and 25, are expected to appear on Monday in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court to face kidnapping and murder charges, police said in a statement.

Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said Luyanda Shezi, 23, was allegedly kidnapped and severely assaulted by the suspects.

“On 13 June 2017, the victim was at Industrial Park at Phoenix area, when he was allegedly kidnapped by the suspects. They were allegedly accusing him of being involved in criminal activities in the area. He was severely assaulted with bush knives, sjamboks and stones and forced into a Nissan Hardbody motor vehicle.”

Gwala said last week Tuesday, Shezi’s brother became suspicious when he noticed that his brother was still missing and reported the matter to the local police.

“Investigation was conducted and one suspects was arrested and after thorough investigation, more suspects were later arrested and the body of the victim was recovered at KwaMashu area, a week after he went missing.”

Charges of kidnapping and murder were opened at Phoenix police station for further investigation.

Meanwhile, another suspect, Sipho Sithole, 41, appeared on Friday to face the same charges and was remanded in custody. He is also expected to appear on Monday for a bail application.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the members for arresting suspects who had allegedly take the law into their own hands.

“We will not tolerate such people who do not respect the law and commit vigilantism. I encourage community members to hand over alleged criminals to the police and not take the law into their own hands. Those who conduct such unlawful act will face the long arm of the law.” African News Agency
