Durban - After three days of unrelenting rain, the sun is expected to break through the clouds this weekend, bringing with it warm and pleasant conditions.

On Sunday, spring is expected to make its long-waited appearance, Durban weather forecaster Wiseman Dlamini said. “It is going to be a fantastic day, with bright, clear skies in the morning.”

In Durban temperatures are expected to reach a high of 28ºC.

Meanwhile, the city’s emergency control and disaster management team has been working around the clock to assist those affected by this week’s heavy rain.

Municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said they had received reports of landslides in Ward 82, uMlazi, which had resulted in shacks being washed away and about 50 people displaced.

They were being housed at a local hall and had been supplied with blankets and food, Mofokeng said. Other areas reported to have been affected were Ward 32 in KwaMashu and Ward 90 in Isipingo.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Nomusa Dube, called on communities to work with disaster management officials, who have been dispatched across KZN to offer relief.

Kwanele Ncalane, spokesman for the provincial Department of Transport, said they were still on high alert.

“If the rain continues, we will have to close some roads, especially those that have stormwater drains that do not work properly.”

Metro police spokesman, Superintendent Sibonelo Mchunu, said many city roads had been affected by the rains.

Eskom said the cold snap had led to an increase in the demand for power, leaving the performance of power stations volatile. - Daily News
