Polokwane – Four people died, including a young child, and 12 other people were injured when a minibus taxi and a car collided on the N1 northbound about 35km from Polokwane in Limpopo on Saturday evening.

ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene shortly after 6pm and found the car in the middle of the road and the taxi some distance away on the side of the road, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

Several people were found “strewn across the scene” while others were found walking along the roadside, he said.

“On further assessment, paramedics found that two men, a woman, and a young girl, believed to be four-years-old, had sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the patients and they were declared dead on the scene.”

Twelve other injured people were found on the scene. Four were in a critical condition while eight others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Paramedics assessed and treated the injured, providing the critically injured with advanced life support. Once treated, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further urgent treatment. The road was closed for some time due to the collision. The cause of the accident was not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations, Meiring said.
