Polokwane - Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha on Monday expressed sadness at the loss of lives in a car accident over the weekend near Tzaneen. “It is sad that several lives have to perish in this fashion,” said Mathabatha. “It is breadwinners and future leaders.”

On Sunday, members of the Zion Christian Church were travelling back from their church service when the fatal accident happened near Tzaneen. En route back to Phalaborwa town in the Mopani District Municipality, the bus driver allegedly lost control and crashed along George's Valley.

Ten people died, including one child. Mathabatha said he hoped investigations into the cause of the accident would render answers soon.

Meanwhile, the Limpopo traffic department's Victor Khumalo said although the cause of the accident was not clear, investigations were underway.

The province's traffic department spokesperson Kaiso Moatane said the driver had allegedly raised concern about the road worthiness of the bus, but was made to drive it in spite of his protestations.
