A man drowned and two others are missing after a boat capsized off Bluewater Bay, near Port Elizabeth, on Sunday, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Andre Beetge said six people were in the boat when it capsized.

“One drowned, three are missing and two managed to reach the shore.

“The search is still on, we do not have much information,” he said.

He could not confirm whether they were a team of rugby players referred to in an earlier SABC report.

According to the broadcaster, 10 members of a rugby team from Port Elizabeth got into difficulties while swimming in the surf at Bluewater Bay on Sunday.

Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) pulled some of them to safety, but five were still missing, the SABC reported.

The NSRI could not be reached for comment. - Sapa
