Johannesburg - South Africa should invest in science institutions because it is crucial for social and economic development, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor said on Saturday.
“South Africa has lagged behind many countries in science achievements and innovation,” she said in a statement prepared for delivery.
The development of vaccines and medicines, satellite prototypes, rural development and food security, depended on science and technology students, she said.
The minister said everyone needed to understand the role of science in areas of social and economic development.
“In order to be a part of making these great breakthroughs you must excel in the basic understanding of mathematics, physics, chemistry and life sciences.”
She hoped that Science Week, which starts on August 1, would inspire more youth to get into the field. - Sapa
