Mbombela - Mpumalanga residents were on Thursday warned of possible flooding as heavy rains in the province continued.

The provincial traditional affairs department said SA Weather Service reports indicated the rain would carry on for the next few days in most parts of the province.

“People in low-lying areas are advised to move away from river banks and they must avoid crossing full rivers and overflowing bridges,” spokesman Simphiwe Kunene said.

The provincial water affairs department was monitoring river flows and dam levels. All municipalities in the province were instructed to activate their local joint operations committees and be on standby, he said.

Motorists were urged to be cautious and not drive over submerged bridges or through flowing water.

Kunene said roofs had been blown off in parts of Thaba Chweu, Nkomazi, Mbombela, Bushbuckridge, Umjindi, Mkhondo and Chief Albert Luthuli municipalities.

“Some of the houses have been repaired and where they have not, tents and food parcels have been provided to the affected families.”
