Ten people were killed and seven injured when a minibus taxi collided with a car on the N4 just outside Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.

A taxi travelling from Emalahleni veered into oncoming traffic after a tyre burst and collided head-on with a car around 6.20am on Sunday, Captain Leonard Hlathi said.

The accident happened near Rondebosch dam, not far from the Hendrina offramp.

Nine people in the taxi, as well as the driver of the car, were killed. The minibus caught fire after the accident. Four of the dead were burnt beyond recognition. The other victims were scattered along the road.

The taxi driver and six others were injured and taken to Middelburg provincial hospital.

The taxi was apparently transporting staff to the Alzu 1 Stop petrol on the N4 in Middelburg. - Sapa
