Three people died after a bakkie collided with an oncoming car on the N1 highway between Edenburg and Trompsburg on Saturday morning, Free State police said.

Police spokesperson Inspector Loraine Kalp said the bakkie had been on its way to Johannesburg when the two vehicles were involved in a collision after the bakkie driver appeared to have lost control of his vehicle.

"A case of culpable homicide has been opened to investigate," said Kalp.

The driver of the bakkie was identified as Ashwin Steenkamp, from Cape Town while the car's occupants were identified as Steven Petzer and Jonathan Donoghue, both from Kempton Park. - Sapa
