Rustenburg - A driver was burnt beyond recognition when his car collided head-on with a minibus taxi near Vryburg, North West transport authorities said on Monday.

Acting provincial transport spokesman Thabo Sematle said the accident occurred about 30 kilometres from Vryburg to Ganyesa on Sunday.

“It is alleged that the driver of a Toyota Tazz lost control of his vehicle and collided head on with a Toyota Quantum.

“Eleven passengers and one infant who were travelling in the Quantum managed to get out before the vehicle burst into flames. The driver of the Tazz who was travelling alone was trapped in the vehicle and was burnt beyond recognition. The identity of the Tazz driver could not yet be confirmed,” he said.

North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Mpho Motlhabane said he was saddened by the incident.

“As a department we are deeply affected by this incident where a person lost a life, especially in this cruel manner. We are sending our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wishing a speedy recovery to the critically injured.”

He appealed to motorists to be extra careful on the roads, especially during this week when the traffic volume was expected to increase on the roads of the province and the country at large as people would be travelling to different destinations to cast their votes during this year’s local government elections.

“Let us go and vote, and come back safely so that we all enjoy the benefits of our local government votes for the next five years.”
