A newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket has been found abandoned at a dumping site in Mahikeng, North West police said on Sunday.

Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said the girl was found on Friday at 7pm.

“Police found a written note wrapped up with the baby. The note was written by the baby's mother.”

Ngubane said the mother explained in the letter the baby was born after she had been raped.

“In the letter, she wished that the baby be seen by passing people, so they can assist her to raise the child as she cannot maintain the baby even though she loved her.”

He said baby Tlhompo, as the mother called her in the letter, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for dehydration.
