Rustenburg – The North West education department on Monday said it will spend nearly R7 million on winter camps for more than 35 000 matric pupils.

“The winter camps follows after the smooth mid-year examination process which concluded on Friday [June],” said spokesman Elias Malindi.

“The mid-year examinations was based on the syllabus learners have done since the beginning of the year and it was intended to prepare them for the final examination to be written at the end of the year.

“These examinations also assist the educators to observe if learners have understood the work done to this far,” said Malindi.

He said the department has put aside an amount of R6 873 690 to ensure that the winter camps programmes run successfully.

“There are 68 venues across the province in all the four districts, which will accommodate the learners and teachers during the period of the camps,” said Malindi.

The winter camps were intended to assist and prepare learners to be able to deal with areas which they did not understand in their classes.

“This will enable them to write legibly, think critically and apply the acquired knowledge and skills during their final examinations,” said Malindi.

The winter camps started on June 24 and were expected to run until July 16.

There are 35 519 Grade 12 learners across the North West province.
