Vaalkop Dam – An investigation has been instituted into the quality of water in Rustenburg, Magalies Water said on Thursday.

Acting chief executive Charles Mohalaba said the national department of water and sanitation was probing the quality of water in Rustenburg following complaints from residents.

“The acting municipal manager of Moses Kotane local municipality has indicated that they do not have problems with water supply, however there are challenges in some areas. The water quality in the Rustenburg municipality is being investigated,” he said ahead of a tour of the Vaalkop Dam treatment plant.

The tour was the part of the Water Month Campaign.

Residents in Rustenburg had been complaining that their tap water was the colour of mud.

In January irate residents attempted to march to the municipality to hand over a memorandum to the ANC leaders to complain about, among others, the quality of their tap water.

Mohalaba said 83 percent of households in Majakaneng, south of Brits in the North West, have access to drinking water.

The remaining 17 percent draw water from 21 Jojo tanks strategically placed in the village.

Majakaneng was the centre of protests in February last year. Residents blocked the N4 highway and set trucks and cars on fire as they demanded water.

This led to the national department of water and sanitation taking the control of the function to provide water at the municipality.

Mohabala said Magalies Water was also drilling three boreholes in Koster and another three in Swartruggens in the Kgetlengrivier local municipality.

Swartruggens was the area hardest hit by the drought hit area within the Kgetlengrivier municipality.

The Vaalkop Dam plant supplies water to the Rustenburg and Moses Kotane local municipalities, the Royal Bafokeng Administration, Sun City and the local mines.
