Top wrestling promoter Paul Lloyd was shot dead in the Johannesburg suburb of Helderkruin, Roodepoort, on Monday afternoon in what police believe could have been the result of a love triangle.
Lloyd was allegedly involved with a woman whose husband told her earlier that day not to have contact with the 43-year-old promoter, West Rand police spokesperson Inspector Herman Esterhuizen said yesterday.
The woman allegedly defied her husband's orders and contacted Lloyd. He was not home at the time. When Lloyd later received her message he returned the call, Esterhuizen said.
Lloyd allegedly went to the woman's home armed with a four-pound hammer. An argument ensued between him and the woman's husband, who locked himself in the study. Lloyd apparently banged on the door with the hammer.
"It is alleged that in an attempt to protect himself, the suspect produced a firearm. It is further alleged that he opened the door and in the process a shot went off, fatally wounding Lloyd in the head," Esterhuizen said.
After wounding Lloyd, the man called the police. - Sapa
