Limpopo Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi is leading a push to force former whites-only schools to admit black pupils.

Ramatlhodi and Education MEC Joyce Mashamba on Wednesday visited one of the four schools that were reportedly using language as a barrier to admitting blacks.

The four schools under the spotlight are Hoërskool Potgietersrust in Mokopane, Frans du Toit Secondary in Phalaborwa, Eugene Marias Primary and Hans Strydom Secondary, both in Naboomspruit.

Professor Harry Nengwekhulu, education Superintendent-General in the province, said the department had received complaints of discrimination.

"They were arguing that they did not want to take black pupils because the Afrikaans character of their schools would disappear. They also argued that their schools were Afrikaans medium and blacks pupils preferred to be taught in English.

"Our position is clear. They cannot use language as a barrier and that is the reason we decided to send education officials to prevent any form of discrimination from taking place. In one school, where the principal had claimed that the school was full, I saw four empty classrooms," said Nengwekhulu.

"The law says the school governing body can decide on the language policy but this can only happen after admission," he added.

He sent a circular to schools stating that no pupil should be denied admission on the basis of language. "These are public institutions and all children who live close to these schools should be able to access them."

He said after the school visit it was obvious that the white pupils had no problem interacting with black pupils - the problem lay with the white parents.
