The four men arrested for the shooting of Rwandan Lieutenant General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa have asylum in South Africa.

Juma Huseni (35), Ahmed Ali (26), George Francis (31) and Shafiri Bakari (30) appeared in Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder.

Huseni, Francis and Bakari have allegedly handed over asylum papers to the investigating officer, while Ali claims to have asylum papers but has not yet produced them.

Prosecutors would not reveal the nationalities of the four men.

The case was postponed so the suspects' immigration status can be verified ahead of their bail application.

On June 19, Nyamwasa was shot in the stomach by a gunman outside his Sandton home. He survived the attack.

The case resumes on July 14.
