An Afrikaner family wants refugee status in the United States, claiming they will be victims of racism if they return to South Africa, The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Their lawyer was trying to get academics in the US to give credence to their claim, according to the newspaper.
They did not want to speak to the newspaper “because of privacy and safety concerns”, said their lawyer Rehim Babaoglu.
A University of Memphis scholar has rejected requests by the “white Afrikaner farmers” to help them in their court application.
“I am not interested in assisting Afrikaners claiming discrimination in a non-racial, democratic, post-apartheid South Africa,” said Professor Mark Behr, who is also a white Afrikaner.
“In my scholarly opinion, there is absolutely no basis for their allegation, whatever evidence they may present.”
He told the newspaper that in his view no other academic would back their claims either. - Sapa

How sad that racism is creeping back into SA and it has been sown, in the majority, by the ANCYL and certain faction of the ANC itself. I suppose then that 17 years of affirmative action preventing white people from getting jobs, racial quotas in sport preventing some white people from being chosen for a team based on their skin colour and the many violent racist farm attacks by black people on white South African farmers, which was also endorsed and encouraged by Julius Malema is in no way a form of racism in any way then. Dr. Behr, like many others like him, is a state of denial, whitnissing the destruction of a beautifull coutry by the corrupt, genocide promoting people they themselves helped into power. Lets invite them to come and see the destruction themselves. Wunderfull post '94 eductation, Aids, de-industrialization, pollution, rampant crime and genocide promotion by political leaders without any repremind from the 'elders'.

Racism is alive and well and living in South Africa. BEE - Black Economic Empowerment - by its very definition is racist. Wait! that should read Black Elite Empowerment. Why should the South African Government be so scared of 9% of the population that they actually make a law to exclude those people. Hitler had a similar idea or has everyone forgotten?

I don't think any of you realize that racism is slowly but surely creeping back into our society. It hasn't burst back on to the scene just yet but there is definitely signs of it introducing itself once again. And it's going to get really ugly. Worse than ever before. So... I share this guys concern and his justification. I myself will never jump ship, but I'm not married, nor do,I have kids, if I did however I'm sure I would be contemplating a similar move. The country is going to the dogs people. Sad but true.

Behr sounds like a real as****hole. He who, as GK explained was a double agent. I wouldnt trust anything he says, so people dont let him upset you. I feel for the blacke, not the present day ones, it was their fathers and mothers that bore the brunt of Apartheid. I dont blame them for feeling bitter, but that is all over now, the bad Afrikaner has turned into a meek and mild friend, he has realised what he did was wrong. It is up to Zuma to extend the hand of friendship, the lion to lay down with the lamb so to speak. So much more can be attained by using the carrot, not the stick. It is up to the blacks to show they can forgive, for if they cant we will never have peace and prosperity.

Ashley. Frankly speaking I think that you are confuse. All over in the world you find crime. It is true that in the new south Africa crimes are committed toward whites as well as toward blacks people. That does not mean there is racism. It is a societal problem that we must together try to solve to make South Africa a better place to live in. There white south africans who are killing whites in the new south africa as there blacks people who are killing blacks. How do you qualify these cases? Can we talk about racism? I don't think so. Please let move together toward the new south africa. If you are not ready emigrate I don't know where because if you go to the USA you will find a black man (a coloured) OBAMA ruling the country. Good Luck, it's a shame you don't want to stay in South Africa, but I'd say the problem is whites are made to feel unwelcome in their own country, attacks on out culture, calls for us to go back to Europe and being excluded from interacting with the country, i.e. affirmative action. Please my black brothers and sisters, whites are part of the solution not the problem.

Not sure that Prof Behr is the best candidate to make any judgement - he seems to swap sides. Not a criticism, just an observation. I wish the family seeking asylum well - there are many reasons why people leave their country and to make such a radical move must come from a feeling that their lives cannot progress where they are. Yup, white farmers being murdered by the droves and the government does nothing to stop it, the ANCYL even encourages it, and yet there is no rasism againt whites in south africa. Got it.
