Two expatriate South Africans killed in a fire at an upmarket shopping centre in Doha, Qatar, were buried on Tuesday afternoon, the international relations department said.
“I can confirm that the two South Africans were laid to rest at 4pm Qatar time, so that is 3pm South African time, in Doha,” said spokesman Nelson Kgwete.
Earlier, Kgwete confirmed that the two South Africans were a 28-year-old woman teacher, who worked at the mall's day care centre, and an 18-month-old toddler who attended the centre.
“The South African Embassy in Doha is in touch with families of the deceased and is rendering consular assistance to them,” he said in a statement.
“The government would like to express its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Qatar, and especially the families of the deceased.”
The Star newspaper named the dead woman as Shameega Charles and the child as Umar Emeran.
Associated Press reported that the fire broke out in a creche at the Villaggio Mall. Thirteen children were among those killed. - Sapa
