The historic grave of Saartjie Baartman, who was reburied near her birthplace in the Gaamtoos Valley six years ago, has been vandalised.

The vandals stole a gold plaque with Baartman's details, erected after her reburial in August 2002.

Gamtkwa Khoisan Council member Hester Booysen said the Khoi people were very concerned as the grave had been neglected with no-one taking responsibility for it.

"The grave is one of the tourist attractions in Hankey and people are so disappointed when they visit the grave because there is so much that could be done," said Booysen.

She said while it was just the plaque that had been stolen, they feared more damage could be done to the grave.

Hankey tourism manager Gloria Mphahlele said the grave had not been fully secured and blamed Kouga Municipality, temporary custodians of the site, for the neglect.

She said the municipality and the South African Heritage Resources Agency were supposed to ensure the grave was well maintained as a tourism attraction.
