A sangoma is expected to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for rape, said Gauteng police.

The 39-year-old man allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman, claiming he wanted to rid her of an evil spirit, at the sangoma's house in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, said Constable Edwin Ntsheo on Tuesday.

The sangoma allegedly went to the woman's home on Saturday looking for her brother. He was not home at the time and asked the woman to accompany him to his home to fetch herbs for her brother.

"On the way he told the woman that she had a tokoloshe (an evil spirit) living in her, and he had to get rid of it."

The sangoma asked the woman to undress and to lie on her back so that he could cleanse her, because the tokoloshe was strong. He then allegedly raped her.

The sangoma was arrested on Monday morning after the woman opened a case of rape against him on Sunday. - Sapa
