Johannebsurg - The search for a 45-year-old St Francis Bay man continued on Sunday, after the man disappeared about 10km up Krom River, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
“Our NSRI St Francis Bay volunteers are assisting the police with an ongoing search and have deployed their boats to assist the police with the ongoing search,” NSRI St Francis Bay station commander Marc May said in a statement.
“A police K-9 dog search and rescue unit are also on the scene assisting in the search. A police dive unit has been alerted.”
May said the man and two other men were in a small canoe when it capsized on Saturday evening.
NSRI volunteer crew who live on the river responded by boat and another NSRI crew responded by road. Police and ambulance also responded after the two men alerted rescuers.
“The two friends had raised the alarm after they had managed to reach the shore. They were not injured,” he said.
NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the water to conduct free dive searches, and searches by boats and on the riverbank continued well into the night.
