On Tuesday morning the Johannesburg High Court sentenced disgraced former National Commissioner of Police Jackie Selebi to 15 years imprisonment.

Jackie Selebi Sentence

Judge Meyer Joffe said Selebi failed to show any remorse, had lied and manufactured evidence, and embarrassed the police service.

"There are no substantial or compelling circumstances which justify the imposition of a lesser sentence," said the judge.

He said this was "not disproportionate" to the crime. The defence immediately applied for bail pending an application for leave to appeal. He was granted bail of R20 000.

Meanwhile, Steven Saunders and Diane Muller, Glenn Agliotti's ex-girlfriend, were both granted Section 204 indemnity for the evidence they provided in court during the Jackie Selebi corruption trial. But Agliotti was not so lucky.

"No such order will be made in respect of Mr Agliotti," said Judge Joffe.

Judge Joffe emphasised the need for a sentence to fit the crime, and for the need of mercy in making a judgment.

"When determining an appropriate sentence, there is a duty on the presiding officer to approach the judgment with a mindset of mercy, compassion and plain humanity," he read.

"Mercy is a humane and balanced quality of thought that tempers one's approach."
