Durban - Student Representative Councils from major universities across the country have welcomed the Jacob G Zuma foundation's move to fund 19 students to study abroad.

On Friday, Zuma will officiate a send off for the students who will study at the American University of Nigeria.

UCT SRC Leader Rorisang Moseli said the foundation's move was similar to one of their demands at a meeting with Higher Education minister Blade Nzimande on Thursday.

“As the SRC, we outlined that we would like to see greater collaboration among South Africa and other African states and also for a number of South African students to have access to higher education elsewhere on the continent and are afforded the same possibilities”, he said.

Wits SRC Secretary General Fasiha Hassan, said the SRC welcomed the foundation's cause describing it as “a very good opportunity.”

University of Johannesburg SRC President Khusto Rammutla also came out in support of the move.

“It is a great opportunity for the students, if we could implement that system to get more students to study abroad that will be good for the South African image,” she said.

The ceremony will take place at Dube House in Durban.
