Cape Town - The injured pygmy sperm whale which beached at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg was euthanised on Saturday, the Cape Town disaster risk management centre said.
“The marine mammal has been euthanised by the department of environmental affairs and the SPCA by using a captive bolt pistol,” spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.
“The carcass was removed to the facility of the department of environmental affairs in Paarden Eiland.”
A necropsy would be done on the whale by department of environmental affairs scientists, said Solomons-Johannes.
The 2.5 metre whale had been washed against the rocks and then landed on the beach on Saturday morning. It had severe lacerations on its body caused by the rocks. - Sapa
