Cape Town - A Belgian man canyoning in the Crags in Plettenberg Bay was killed after flash floods washed through the area and swept him downstream.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon said rescuers were dispatched in Nature’s Valley at around 12.45pm after news that the expedition he was part of had been caught in the flood.

Canyoning is a sport wherein participants traverse along canyons using a variety of techniques such as scrambling, walking, climbing, swimming, jumping or even abseiling.

The expedition consisted of four tourists and two guides. According to Lambinon, they were in the process of escaping from the flood when the 29-year-old Belgian man was caught in the coursing water.

He was swept down the Salt River and the alarm was immediately raised.

After searching the area, teams eventually found his body.
