The Western Cape’s first winter snow has fallen high up on the Matroosberg mountains, about 35km outside the town of Ceres.

Staff at the Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve loaded photos of the snow on to the reserve’s Facebook page.

On Wednesday they warned visitors: “Snow Alert! 4x4s will find the first snow at the Z-bend, that is about halfway up the trail. Hikers will have to put in some effort.”

On Wednesday night, with snow still on the mountains and temperatures below zero, reserve staff changed their Facebook profile picture to one of the snowy peaks.

But the SA Weather Service says no further snowfall is expected soon, although the weather in and around Ceres is expected to remain chilly.

In Cape Town, temperatures will rise during the rest of the week, but will start dipping from Monday. Severe weather warnings are in place for the Western Cape for the rest of the week, with rough seas and waves as high as 7m along the coast.

According to the Weather Service’s website, the coldest towns in South Africa today are Venterstad and Hanover (-7°C) and Burgersdorp (-6°C). - Cape Argus
