Eight die on Cape roads over weekend

Cape Town - Eight people died on the roads of the Western Cape over the weekend, provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said.

A pedestrian, believed to be in his late 20s, was struck by a vehicle and killed on the N2 near Jakes Gerwel Drive.

ER24 Communications manager Werner Vermaak said paramedics found the man lying in the road.

He had sustained multiple injuries and was declared dead on the scene, Vermaak said.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be in his early 30s, was found on the scene and suffered minor injuries, he said.

Other road deaths were a driver and two passengers, as well as a pedestrian in George, a pedestrian in Plettenberg Bay, a passenger in Somerset West, and a pedestrian knocked

down on the R300 near Hindle Road.

Provincial traffic officers arrested 16 people for drunk driving after 1409 vehicles were screened.

During speed policing operations, 4769 vehicles were screened and 654 drivers were prosecuted.

One driver was arrested for speeding in Worcester, one for speeding in Laingsburg and two for speeding in Vredenburg, and another for false

documentation in Worcester.

A total of 170 fines to the tune of R213 350 were issued.
