A city man died after his car swerved off Tafelberg Road on the front face of Table Mountain and plunged 200 metres.

A couple who were hiking along the mountain spotted the man’s mangled black Ford Cortina from their vantage point and called the police this morning.

Police said today they were still trying to determine what time the accident happened and the circumstances around it.

Police spokesman Captain Ezra October said officers had been called to the crash scene around 9am t oday.

By late morning, SA National Parks (SANParks) rangers, police officers and Metro Rescue teams were at the scene.

A trail of debris, including the car’s battery, one of its doors, a sunshade and a windscreen, were scattered along the car’s path.

Metro teams could not immediately start hoisting the man’s body from the car – the vehicle was perched close to the edge of another cliff, and had to be stabilised.

Once the wreck had been stabilised, the man’s body was brought to the top of the road. - Cape Argus
