A 49-year-old man died after a shark attack in Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

The man was surfing near the Keurbooms river mouth, at Lookout Beach, when he was attacked at 9am, said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.

He was pulled out of the water by his fellow surfers, who alerted the NSRI.

Upon arrival at the scene, paramedics found shark bite marks on the man's thigh and groin.

They attempted resuscitation and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Doctors tried for hours to save the man, but he could not be resuscitated.

Lambinon said the man's identity would not be released until the NSRI was confident that all family members had been informed. –Sapa
