Cape Town -

The city and national government have denied giving drivers who work for Uber “a short-term solution to licensing” after the electronic hailing service claimed an agreement had been reached.

In recent months questions have been raised about whether taxi drivers who use the cellphone application Uber provides, require public transport operating licences.

Last week the city warned Uber cab drivers to start producing public transport operating licences or face continued legal action after more than 60 of their vehicles were impounded in January.

Members of the Western Cape Metered Taxi Council also marched through the city centre last week to express concern about Uber drivers operating illegally.

On Friday, Uber spokeswoman Samantha Allenberg said: “After a number of constructive meetings… we do have a short-term solution to licensing.”

But mayco member for transport Brett Herron denied this on Sunday.

“We have not reached a short-term solution.”

Siphesihle Dube, spokesman for Transport and Public Works MEC Donald Grant, also denied a short-term solution was in place.
