Cape Town - Cape Town’s oldest township, Langa, will again open its streets for pedestrians and play on Sunday.

“Jungle Walk, Rubusana Avenue and a part of Washington Street in Langa will be transformed into a playground giving residents the opportunity to imagine what streets would be like if they were designed around pedestrians rather than vehicles,” said City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor.

The City has partnered with citizen-driven initiative Open Streets to create spaces where communities can enjoy a few hours of car-free fun-filled activities.

“The concept of Open Streets allows residents to enjoy and experience their streets freely and safely, bringing back memories of yesteryear when streets were the playgrounds in many areas,” said Bloor.

Grassy Park, Observatory, and Bree Street in Cape Town have all also played host to the Open Streets initiative.

Langa had its first taste of Open Streets in October 2013 and will again, clear its roads for residents.

From 12pm - 5pm, Rubusana Avenue, Washington Street, and Jungle Walk will come alive with the activities including “diski”, spoken word, street art, and ultimate frisbee, the City said.

Local organisations participating include reformed gangster Sihle Tshabalala’s Brothers for All, iKhaya le Langa, and Bridges for Music.

“Streets are one of the most socially diverse spaces in the city. This event provides the ideal opportunity for Capetonians from across the city to make their way to Langa to experience its pulse,” said Bloor.

Jungle Walk, Rubusana Avenue, and a part of Washington Street will be closed to vehicles from 11am to 6pm and parking will only be permitted at Langa High School and the Langa Train Station.

Bunga Avenue will operate as per usual.
