Cape Town - A Caledon man who went “looking for a lekker tyd (a good time) in Leonsdale” was robbed of all his valuables, worth nearly half-a-million rand.

The stolen items include his Audi, worth

R250 000, and a chain worth R150 000.

According to a police source, the 46-year-old man was at a casino in Caledon when he met a Cape Town man on Sunday.

“In his report, the man said he met this guy from Cape Town and because the casino was closing, they decided to go to GrandWest in Goodwood. After a while they left GrandWest and were looking for a lekker tydjie (a good time) and he wanted dagga and alcohol.”

The Cape Town man allegedly took his new friend to Avondrust Court in Leonsdale to a flat where they could get a dagga joint.

The Caledon man told police that shortly after arriving, he was jumped by a group of men who robbed him of his Audi A3, a chain worth R150 000, an iPhone valued at R15 000, his watch worth R15 000 and a gold ring worth R50 000.

The source says the man got a fright and ran for help.

He apparently ran around Leonsdale for hours before eventually ending up at Elsies River Police Station where he was assisted.

Police’s Sinathi Joni confirms the case and says: “The 46-year-old man was allegedly robbed of his vehicle, cellphone and jewellery in Leonsdale, Elsies River at 4am by unknown male suspects. The incident is being investigated.”

Elsies River Community Police Forum spokesperson, Imraahn Mukkadam, says while Leonsdale is a high-risk area, he believes the victim was irresponsible.

“This is not a reflection on Elsies. He came looking for trouble and he got trouble. This could also have happened anywhere on the Cape Flats. This man should have used common sense and he acted irresponsibly.”
