Johannesburg - Snow fell in parts of the Western Cape on Friday, the SA Weather Service said.

“Yes, we do have snow on the mountains in the Western Cape, and that includes Table Mountain,” said weather forecaster Henning Grobler in Cape Town.

“It's only on the mountains and not in the suburbs.”

He said the snowfall, which was accompanied by a “little” rainfall, might be gone by Saturday.

“I think the last bit of snow will be there tonight and maybe overnight, but will probably be gone by tomorrow.”

However, the city's Disaster Risk Management Centre denied this.

“No snow was reported on Table Mountain,” said the centre's public awareness head Charlotte Powell.

She said it had only received reports of flooding in some informal settlements.

The areas affected included Strand, Macassar, and Philippi.

“(We) are conducting assessments in flooded areas,” Powell said in a statement.

“Our non-government organisation partners are proving relief, hot meals, and blankets and the city's human settlements department will provide flood kits.”
