Cape Town - A three-metre-long whale shark washed up on a picnic site near Kommetjie in Cape Town on Sunday, the city said.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said surfers at the Soetwater Resort tried to get the shark back into the water but were too late to save it.

The disaster risk management centre removed the carcass with specialised machinery.

An examination would be performed to determine the cause of death. - Sapa
