While IOL has not given up hope that the Protection of State Information Bill will be scrapped, we thought we’d plan for the worse case scenario ...

So here are IOL’s Top 5 things journalists can do if the secrecy bill is signed into law:

 1. Have remembrance parties where we talk about the good old days of investigative journalism.

 2. Sneak up on fellow journalists and say: “Papa wag vir jou!”

 3. Actually read all those press releases and – gasp – do stories on some of them.

 4. Finally complete that Zuma family tree story because we’ll have nothing better to do, and we’ll need all the time in the world to do it. Realise that the Zuma family hasn’t stopped growing, and start from scratch again.

 5. Clean out the car of fast food containers and spare sets of clothes (We know that's not only us).
