Johannesburg – African National Congress deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday cancelled his planned door-to-door programme scheduled for Tembisa and Soweto townships ahead of the party's 105th birthday celebrations.

Ramaphosa was scheduled to conduct door-to-door visits in Tembisa and Soweto on Friday and Saturday as part of a build-up campaign towards the organisation's 105 years celebrations and January 8th Statement.

On Friday Ramaphosa would have conducted a door-to-door campaign and a walk-about in the Winnie Mandela Township, visit the Tembisa Old Age Home, hold a mini-rally at the Winnie Mandela Township taxi rank, and have a dialogue with the South African Youth Council (SAYC) in Katlehong, eKurhuleni.

Saturday would have seen the ANC deputy president continuing with his door-to-door campaign and walk-about in Phomolong Section and a mini rally in Orlando West, as well as having a blitz and walk-about in the Dube Area, around Maponya Shoprite.

ANC spokeswoman Khusela Sangoni confirmed the cancellation, but did not provide reasons for the withdrawal of Ramaphosa from these engagements.

"A new media programme shall be released in due course. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused," Sangoni said.

Many ANC leaders are engaged in similar campaigns in their respective constituencies.

The main 105th anniversary celebrations and January 8th Statement are set to take place on Sunday at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
