Johannesburg - The ANC could not say whether the expulsion of its former youth league president Julius Malema would be raised at its national conference in Mangaung, secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said on Tuesday.

“It's not for me (to decide), it's the floor, and I'm not the floor.”

Mantashe was addressing reporters in Johannesburg on preparations for the party's elective conference later this month.

People could raise many things from the floor, and could also declare things out of order, he said.

It has been suggested that Malema's last hope of returning to the fold will be if the issue is raised from the floor at the conference, and a vote goes in his favour.

Mantashe said that as far as the party was concerned, the finding of the ANC National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal, which confirmed Malema's expulsion on April 24, was final.

Malema was originally suspended for five years for sowing division in the party and for bringing it into disrepute.

He had unfavourably compared the leadership style of President Jacob Zuma to that of former president Thabo Mbeki, and made remarks about bringing about regime change in Botswana, according to the party. - Sapa
