Suspended ANC Youth League President Julius Malema

Media reports have suggested that ANC Youth League president Julius Malema will be expelled from the ruling party on Tuesday.

However, no spokesperson of the national disciplinary committee of appeals or the youth league was available to comment on the reports by the SABC and The New Age newspaper.

SABC radio news said it had “reliably learnt” that Malema would be expelled on Tuesday, while The New Age quoted “highly placed sources” as saying the ANC’s national disciplinary committee of appeals (NDCA) was set to confirm his expulsion.

The New Age said the NDCA would also rule on the suspensions of ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu and secretary general Sindiso Maqaqa.

Malema was expelled from the ANC in November 2011 for sowing division in the party and for bringing it into disrepute.

He was found to have done so by unfavourably comparing the leadership style of President Jacob Zuma to that of former president Thabo Mbeki, and for remarks about bringing about regime change in Botswana.

Despite the expulsion Malema remained ANCYL president until all options to overturn his sentence had been exhausted.

However, he was gagged this month when the ANC's national disciplinary committee suspended him from the ANC after calling Zuma a dictator.

The conditions of the suspension prohibit him from exercising any duty as an ANC member, president of the ANCYL or member of the Limpopo provincial executive committee.

Last week, the NDCA dismissed Malema's bid to have his temporary suspension from the ANC in this matter set aside. - Sapa
