Rustenburg - The ANC chief whip in the North West Provincial Legislature, Hoffman Galeng would donate 600 litres of diesel to residents of Broedersput as part of the Nelson Mandela Day celebration, the party said on Thursday.

Galeng said he would on Friday, celebrate with the community of Broedersput as part of his office’s contribution to the 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

Broedersput is an informal settlement situated along the N18 highway, about 40km between Vryburg and Delareyville.

The area was established 20 years ago, and has no economic activity .The community relies almost exclusively on government social grants for survival.

The informal settlement has 360 households that have electricity and water, but each household must contribute R20 per month to buy diesel for the generator to pump running water.

“It is in this regard that the office of the chief whip will make Mandela Day celebrations unique and very special to the community of Broedersput by providing 600 litres of diesel as a short term relief while ensuring that Eskom and Naledi municipality convert the generator from diesel to electric as a long term solution,” Galeng said.

Galeng was also expected to hand out food parcels to 139 households and two pre-schools on Friday.

He said the department of social development in the North West, had already handed out food parcels to other households.
