Moscow - A New York prosecutor's inquiry into the charitable Trump Foundation is a political scheme designed to divert attention from Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump's spokesman said on Wednesday.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on Tuesday he was looking into the charity run by the Republican presidential candidate, on suspicion that it might have engaged in "some impropriety."

"This is nothing more than another left-wing hit job designed to distract from (Hillary Clinton's) disastrous week," senior communications advisor Jason Miller said in a statement quoted by CNN.

He accused Schneiderman of being a "partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years and has endorsed Hillary Clinton".

On Tuesday, Democrats on the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee sent a letter to US Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking her to investigate the Trump Foundation.

The congressmen said they were concerned about a payment Trump made to a political organisation supporting Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi shortly before her office decided not to join a lawsuit against Trump University.
