Rustenburg – A man and two women have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping an infant in Rustenburg, North West police said on Sunday.

Lt-Col Pelonomi Makau said a 35-year-old woman from Seraleng near Rustenburg gave her six-week-old baby boy to another woman to temporarily look after him on February 9.

"According to information, the [baby's mother] went to a local clinic where she met a 34-year-old woman. They both went to a local tavern for drinks. Allegedly, while at the tavern, the mother left her baby with the woman to buy drinks. On her return the woman and her baby were missing."

An intensive police investigation, with the assistance of community members, was conducted. That led to the home of the 34-year-old woman who allegedly stole the child.

The woman and her 52-year-old boyfriend led police to a house in Monakato near Mogwase where the baby was found unharmed in the house of a 60-year-old Nigerian woman.

All three were arrested and were expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of kidnapping.
