Algerian Finance Minister Karim Djoudi last month issued an order freezing the assets belonging to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his entourage, a local daily reported Sunday.

Djoudi notified banks and financial organisations in a letter dated May 12 of the sanctions under the terms of a United Nations Security Council resolution, the Arabic-speaking daily Echourouk reported.

The letter provided a list of names and entities targeted by the sanctions, the paper added.

The UN Security Council, with strong support from Arab and African nations, on February 26 unanimously passed sanctions against the Gaddafi regime with the aim of stopping a crackdown on anti-government forces.

The European Union has also imposed an asset freeze and travel ban against Kadhafi loyalists and firms suspected of propping up the regime. - Sapa-AFP
