Kunduz - Armed men in northern Afghanistan sprayed acid on three daughters and their parents, officials said on Wednesday.

“Two nights ago, unknown gunmen attacked a house just outside the capital Kunduz city and threw acid on three girls aged 18, 13

and 12 and their parents,” Nadira Giyah, head of Afghan women affairs department in the Kunduz province said.

The attack took place in Bolak-e-Awal area in the capital of northern province of Kunduz, the provincial capital with the same name.

Giyah said the motive behind the attack was that the girl's parent refused to marry their eldest 18-year old daughter to a local warlord.

She said that the gunmen first handcuffed the father and later sprayed acid into the bodies and faces of the family members.

A doctor at the Kunduz provincial hospital said the condition of the 18-year girl is critical and her whole body is burnt.

According to a United Nations agency report issued in April last year, almost one third of Afghan women are exposed to physical and psychological violence, while an estimated 25 per cent suffer from sexual violence.Author: Hares Kakar - Sapa-dpa
