Washington -

What do Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and former US president George W. Bush have in common?

When a sixth-grade teacher in Washington, DC, asked students to compare and contrast the two leaders in a writing assignment, many parents cried foul on Twitter on Thursday and the top administrator was forced to respond.

“I think trying to compare Adolf Hitler to an American president is just not right,” one parent said, according to the Washington Times newspaper. “I didn't agree with Mr Bush or his policies, but that was over the line.”

The parent, who asked not to be identified, said he called the school to complain about the assignment and was told that it was approved by the school system.

But Kaya Henderson, the chancellor of DC public schools, denied it was part of the curriculum for the entire school system. She added in a tweet that the “deeply apologetic” teacher “used poor judgment” and will apologise.

But not all parents were satisfied.

“An apology is not going to remove the damage teacher did to these kids when they were pushing their political agenda,” tweeted Joseph Niemiec.

Others said the teacher should be fired.

The school administrative office said a letter explaining the incident was to be sent home with the children who were given the assignment. - Sapa-dpa
